I work in the Human Brain Research Laboratory at the University of Iowa with a team of neurosurgeons and neuroscientists, studying neurosurgical epilepsy patients who undergo electrode implantation for clinical diagnostic purposes. This provides a unique opportunity for direct electrophysiological recordings from the human brain. My work focuses on studying the functional organization of human auditory cortex through systematic investigation of its basic response properties. This knowledge serves as a foundation for understanding higher auditory functions, i.e. how the brain “makes sense of sound” to build a coherent percept of the environment. I also study how attention, task and level of awareness affect sound processing in the human brain. This line of work seeks to bridge my basic research with interventions for patient benefit.
