Syllabus - What you will learn from this course
Abstraction
This week starts your journey into understanding computer science. You will think about how computer science can help you understand the technology you use every day and you will also learn one of the most important concepts in computer science: abstraction.
State, modularity and applications
This is the second part of the introductory overview of the course. This module will give a high-level overview of the way typical web applications work. It will introduce three key concepts: networks, security and web applications, and will apply them – together with the concepts introduced in the previous week – in order to understand a notional web application.
Data Representation
In this module we will cover three key concepts: data storage, data representation and data compression. You will learn about the ways in which data are represented and stored in a computer, including the use of bit patterns to represent different types of data, the types of hardware used to represent data, and data compression algorithms. You will use this understanding to reason about computer systems and solve problems.
Operating Systems
In this topic students will learn about the functioning of operating systems, the various components of operating systems, the relationship between operating systems and applications, and security issues around operating systems. They will use this understanding to reason about computer systems and solve problems.
