Hi, welcome to the Big Data Capstone Project. I'm Rob Reed, worldwide education evangelist with Splunk. We at Splunk are really exited to be teaming up with the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, to offer you a great opportunity to show off the skills and knowledge you have gained in this specialization. The big data specialization is one of the most popular on Coursera. And this makes us really happy, because our goal is to help everyone regardless of their background to understand how using big data can lead to new insights, solve new problems, and change the world. If you haven't heard of Splunk before, our mission is to enable the curious to look closely at what others tend to ignore, machine data, and find insights that help us solve important and interesting problems. To that end, we think that Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs, are a great opportunity for those with little or no prior knowledge to not just learn to use a tool, but to gain some insight into how people organize, manipulate, query and ultimately solve important and interesting problems. We are delighted to be partnering with SDSC, because of their applied knowledge and deep background in big data. And we believe this course will enable more people to solve more interesting problems to advance society. And we would also love more people to understand the value of tools like the ones we offer st Splunk. In this capstone you will be presented with a big data challenge that we have worked with SDSC to design. It has features that represents the kinds of datasets and problems we see many of our most passionate customers address with Splunk. Although your pink Flamingo game data is created just for use in this course, it aligns well with data from our customers in the interactive online games space. To complete the capstone project, you will be asked to use a number of tools to help demonstrate the skills you learned about in this course, and you will also have the opportunity to perform analysis in Splunk to see how you can use it for log file analytics. Using Splunk will be optional, but if you do use it, we hope you will enjoy learning about its power and options. Most importantly, we hope you achieve the goals you set for yourself when you decided to take this course and finish the capstone project. Splunk is excited to talk to learners creating exceptional projects. For those wishing to be considered, we will have an additional submission option. From these submissions, we will invite the top handful of projects to present to and talk with Splunk engineers, via Google Hangouts or Skype. Look for more details in a later reading, and good luck on your final project.
