Hi, this is a brief review of the terms toxicology, toxicokinetics, and toxicodynamics. So let's start with toxicology, ology is the study of. So toxicology is the study of poisons. Toxicologists study the adverse effects of chemicals and toxins on living systems. So for example, a toxicologist might study whether Bisphenol A, known as BPA, is harmful to humans. Next let's look at toxicokinetics. Kinetic is movement. Toxicokinetics is the study of how a chemical or toxin gets into the body, and then what the body does to the chemical. Toxicokinetics involves forming processees, absorption, distribution, bio transformation and elimination. So for example with BPA, can BPA enter the human body when we eat food that was stored in containers made with BPA? And from our stomachs, can BPA travel through our bloodstream to the target organs of the body. Lastly, let's look at toxicodynamics. Dynamic is a change or an interaction. So toxicodynamics is the study of the effects chemicals or toxins may have on the body. What does the chemical do to the body when it gets to the target organ? It refers to the potential molecular biochemical and physiological affects that chemical or toxins may have on our biological systems. For example if BPA is in our bodies, how might it affect us? What might it do to our brains, prostate glands, or other parts of our body?
