In this teach-out, we learned about epidemiologic tools to help us track, investigate, and understand outbreaks like the COVID-19 epidemic we are experiencing right now. In this call to action, we present you with a number of ways you can use what you learn to support the public health response to COVID-19. First, you can commit to and be an advocate for social distancing. By practicing social distancing, you are making a powerful personal contribution to the effort. Beyond that, you can also be an advocate by helping to distribute messages about the importance of social distancing during the outbreak. You have learned in this teach-out, how epidemiologic curves are measured, so you can help explain why slowing the spread of the virus, will help flatten the curve and save lives. Second, you can be an advocate for listening to scientific evidence to guide what our outbreak response should be, look for ways to promote epidemiologically sound decision-making at the local level. For example, you could incorporate what you've learned into a phone call or e-mail to your elected leaders, or into a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Third, you can share evidence-based information on the best ways to protect yourself. For example, the coronavirus at a glance infographic from our Johns Hopkins colleagues, is a useful science-based resource you can easily share with your friends on social media. It includes reliable guidance about hand-washing, covering your cough, social distancing, and face mask use. You can use what you've learned in this teach-out, to evaluate information sources like this one before deciding whether to share. I hope that you've found this teach-out valuable, and that it has helped to equip you with a scientific background you need to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. We're all in this together.
