Hi there, and welcome to fundamentals of visualization with Tableau. I'm Desiree Abbott. I'll be your instructor for this course. The first in the Data Visualization with Tableau Specialization presented by UC Davis. Now usually at this point, your instructor will tell you that they've been doing this for about 100 years and they have so much cred. But let me be real with you, I've had one of those spaghetti-shaped career paths, so I haven't been doing this for 100 years. But that spaghetti-shaped career of mine has given me quite a breadth of experience, including some brief and unsuccessful dabbling in real estate, studying physics, a bit more successfully for about eight years, and getting a couple of degrees along the way. During my physics studies though, I decided I'd had enough of school. So from there, I jumped squarely into the analytics world as a product analyst in the tech industry. I was in analytics for about four years, during which I learned to use Tableau, and after which I moved from analytics to focus solely on data visualization, or data viz for short. Most recently, I moved out of analytics and reporting to become a prototyper of customer facing data visualizations. So even though I haven't been doing this forever, I have spent quite a lot of time learning, reading, and being involved in the Data Visualization Community. I'm a Tableau Desktop Certified Associate and have been for the past few versions of Tableau Desktop. I'm an active member of the Data Visualization Society. As you'll see throughout this course, I'm an avid Tableau community participant. In this course, you'll learn a bit about data visualization in general, like what it is, why we do it, and a bit about the history. We'll get Tableau installed, and I'll show you the ropes about what are all the bells and whistles and the different parts of the program. After that, we'll dive in and start making some visits. You'll learn about a few different chart types so you can get a feel for what we're doing. Then we'll put it all together in an interactive dashboard. Finally, in the last module, we'll talk a bit about how to get involved in the Tableau and greater data viz communities, including the Makeover Monday Project. Then we'll finish things off by doing our own data viz makeover. It's going to be one heck of an adventure. So let's get started.
