For any relationship to occur, you obviously would involve at least two people. We have Sam and Leslie. They each would get into a relationship because they have needs that they want to be addressing and their needs could also be different. Say, for example, Sam may need affiliation, attachment, intimacy. Leslie may be looking for security, support, and proving himself or herself. These two sets of needs may be very compatible, or they may get into conflict with each other. And what they would need to do is obviously, to communicate and see if they can negotiate a better outcome. And Leslie and Sam, when they get together, meet each other and start to develop a relationship, there will be a different set of circumstances. Sam may be someone who is divorced or unemployed. Leslie may be someone who just got promoted or he or she may have some form of childcare obligation. And there's, of course, the circumstances in which they meet. They may be meeting in a class or see each other in a museum or even meet in a party. Both of them will be bringing in their own characteristics into the picture. Leslie may be a highly controlling and suspicious person. Sam, on the other hand, can be someone who is sensitive and emotional. And again, how compatible these two sets of characteristics are is an open question. Finally, whether a relationship is going to work pit well or not, will be contingent upon their respective capacities. And this can be referring to financial, intellectual, emotional, social capital, or something like physical strength and skill. And whether a relationship will work out or not would be very much depending on how their needs, circumstances, characteristics, and capacities are negotiated. And have you noticed in this particular presentation, the word relationship is missing one letter? Yes, you are right. In relationships, the most important part is the n, the interaction, the communication, and the compatibility between the two parties. So you can actually talk about another set of N3Cs, communication, compatibility, and collaboration.
