Hi, welcome back.
We've been talking about the role that attractiveness plays in popularity, but
we've been focusing specifically on facial attractiveness.
Now we're going to talk about body attractiveness.
Specifically, we're going to talk about obesity and
how obesity may be related to popularity.
As you probably know, the way that we measure obesity is by looking at body mass
index and there are some equation's here that help us to understand what someones
body mass index is.
Of course, it's flawed to some extent,
because it doesn't take into account muscle mass.
But in general, what we do find is that using this figure,
we can understand those that might be underweight of normal weight,
those who might be a bit overweight and also those that might be obese.
And what's been very interesting, especially here in North America.
Perhaps in America, the United States more than anywhere is
that the country is getting very obese.
Let me show you a little bit about that.
The CDC here in Atlanta, Georgia has given us some data over many, many years.
And if you haven't seen these slides before,
you might be interested to see what this looks like.
In the mid 80s, they started by coloring each state based on what
percentage of those in the state met criteria for being overweight or obese.
And what you can see here is that predominantly in the South and
in the Midwest areas, there was some rate of folks being obese.
But there's a different side for every year and
as we get closer and closer, we'll see that more and
more and more states started becoming more and more obese.
Soon, you saw that by the early 90s, there was an entirely new category
of percentage of those states whose members were obese.
And as you'll see with these slides, as they increase in color and change colors,
you'll see that there are new categories,
because states are becoming even more disproportionately obese.
And as we go through here, the 90s, going on and
on, now you can see that there are no states [LAUGH] that
have not a significantly high percentage of folks obese.
Now at least one out of every five,
soon one out of every three people are obese in some of these states.
As we get closer and closer to the present day,
the entire country is turning more and more and more obese.
