[MUSIC] Welcome to the newborn baby care specialization. I’m Dr. Daniel Nicklas, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and I work at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. I'm the lead instructor for this specialization. My team and I are thrilled to offer the four courses and capstone project to you about caring for healthy newborns in the first month of life. Whether you are in the healthcare field or even a parent, this course is the perfect educational opportunity for you to learn about how to keep newborn babies healthy. In preventive health care for newborn baby, you will learn some medical interventions and skills to keep newborns healthy in the days and weeks after they have been born. Will tell you about medicines like vitamin K and erythromycin and how they can prevent serious illnesses. We'll also introduce screening test like hearing screening and new born blood screening that help us to make sure that babies are set up for success right from the start. We will start off by talking about jaundice, looking at the simple ways to identify and treat this common presentation and prevent harm to babies from this condition. In The Newborn Assessment Course, we will walk you through the physical examination from head to toe. You are going to learn that there is so much we can discover just by looking at and observing a new baby. And yes, we'll be listening to and discussing how medical equipment such as a stethoscope or a pulse oximeter can help you in performing your exam. You'll begin to learn how to be able to distinguish some normal findings from some abnormal findings. The guidance to keep newborn babies safe and healthy course will teach you best practices for what parents need to do to keep their babies safe and healthy. This includes how the new baby will spend most of their day, eating sleeping and sometimes crying with positive and helpful advice from experts in the field. Parents need to understand how to optimize nutrition, how to create a safe and happy sleep environment, how to safely transport their baby in their car and how to respond to their babies crying. This course offers sound supportive professional advice in these areas. Care providing, parenting and fatherhood with newborn babies introduces the important role of supportive partners and parents in a variety of households, and what that support looks like. Every household has its own unique structure and dynamics. Given these differences, how can we each effectively provide support as partners, fathers, co parents, grandparents and other guardians. For example, what are special considerations in adoption, in single parenting, in same sex parenting? We wrap up the newborn baby course for with a guest appearance by a newborn baby and a live skills examination led by course instructor Dr. Mary Cone. A newborn baby is an amazing beautiful life filled with hope. There is so much that goes into making sure that babies are born healthy and so much more to think about after they are born. We look forward to working together to ensure new born are provided with the best care possible, by well informed providers and parents like you.
