[MUSIC] Hello everyone. Today we're visiting William Harris Lee violins. One of the many violin shops in the Chicago area. We'll learn how to select the correct size violin and bow for your student. This is my new little student, Lincoln, and we're going to get him set up with a new violin. Are you excited? >> Yes. >> Good. Lisa, the general manager, is going to help him get set up. >> Hi Lincoln. You ready to get sized for a violin? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Al right, come and stand right here in front of me, that's good. Put your feet together, make a v and take a step, good, now you're nice and solid. I'm going to take this hand, we're going to stand up nice and tall like the Statue of Liberty and then bring it to your shoulder, good. Now, stretch your arms straight out, I'll help you hold it. The violin comes just below the wrist. Arranged just from the wrist to the padded lower part of the palm, is just the right area. That's just the right size. You don't want to come too far over here or too far down into the palm. Youre going to bend your arm and wrap your fingers around the scroll. And, the student should be able to wrap the fingers around the scroll and still have a slight bend in the elbow. That looks good. Let's come over here, tap over the high dot. Hold your fingers like a little umbrella right there. That's good. Let's try the bow first, okay? Let's see how long the bow is. All right, we'll place it right at the tip. Nice and straight, and when the bow is at the tip, the arm should still have just a nice relaxed shape, not super straight, not hyper extended. Let your elbow relax. That's perfect. That's just the right size. And then would you like to just try that a little bit, pluck the strings. [SOUND] Very nice. Lets put it in rest position and take a bow [APPLAUSE] we will now take a look at some of the different options for shoulder rests and chin rests. There are only about three different types of chin rests for the small violins. Here are a variety of shoulder rests to choose from. In our program at Northwestern, we prefer that our students use some sort of sponge or play on air, that allows freedom of movement and balance between the head and the hand. Thank you so much for joining us for our trip to the violin shop. It's important for our students' development to make sure he or she has the appropriately size violin. [MUSIC]
