Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to America’s Unwritten Constitution! This course is designed to teach you some of the basic tool and techniques for constitutional interpretation. Over the next 13 modules, Professor Akhil Amar will teach you how to go beyond the text of the U.S. Constitution, while still remaining faithful to it. Please, take some time to watch the two introductory videos and read through some of the course information below. Enjoy!

Welcome to this online course on America's Unwritten Constitution. My name is Akhil Reed Amar, and I'll be your instructor and I just want to tell you two quick things about the course by way of general introduction. First, this course is a sequel to a course that we ran last semester on America's written Constitution. You do not need to have taken that course to take this one. Each course is a stand-alone course, but if you're at all interested in experiencing some of the lectures from the previous course, America's Written Constitution, you're most welcome to do so and we're keeping, we're making these lectures available to you online. So to repeat, you don't have to experience any of those lectures. This is a complete separate stand-alone course. But you're most welcome to at any time review the, the, the lectures from that earlier course, America's written Constitution. Second, this course is a relaunch of a version 2.0 if you will. A second edition of a course that was launched last year. The students last year liked the lectures, liked the experience and so, we've kept everything just the same with one big change, which is connected to what I just said before. The big change is, last year, there was one big course on the written and the unwritten constitution altogether. And that was, a long course. We've decided this year, in the relaunch, to break it up into two halves and we'd have each part of that long course be its own separate stand-alone course. So in some of the lectures that you're going to experience from time to time, you may hear me talk about in the first half of the course or something like that. Don't, don't get concerned, all that means is I'm referring to the, the lectures on America's Written Constitution, which to repeat are available to you but are not in any way required for, for this course. This course is now a complete separate stand-alone course on America's Unwritten Constitution. And in the next lecture, I'm going to tell you what the course is all about so you can decide whether it's right for you. [MUSIC]
