The next genre is the group of Role-Playing Games (RPG). As examples we have Diablo, Final Fantasy... We chose World of Warcraft, which has always had a great success in the different expansions it has. Those games' setting is diverse, for a varied public who are familiar wit the genre. The game control is medium, the story is important and they can both be single and multi player. Their gameplay can be very tricky. As main actions we have fighting, talking to characters, exploring, improving characters, solving puzzles, etc. In this video we can see a cinematic of the World of Warcraft game, which has a high video quality. -Drink, Hellscream, claim your destiny... You will all be conquerors... -And what, Gul'dan, must we give in return? -Everything... [MUSIC] -You would reject this gift? Now we are going to talk on the Action and adventure genre. We have many sub-genres, such as survival horrors, and for this one we have chosen Alone in the Dark. They have a terror environment for a teen and adult public, with medium-difficulty controls, Arcade-type. The story is very important, and usually they are single player, although some are multi player. As important actions we have exploring, shooting, using objects, solving puzzles, etc. Some of those games are based on films. In the example video we can see Alone in the Dark. They can also be taken as shooters in some first-person games. # # # # # Inside the Adventure and action genre we also have the stealth games, and for this sub-genre we have chosen the Metal Gear series. They also have great success, and they have a military and sci-fi setting, meant for a teen and adult public. Their controls are simple but the gameplay is complex, the story is important and they are usually single player. As the players' main actions we have infiltrating, stealthing, exploring, using objects and talking to characters. In the example we can see the Metal Gear video game, which has had many versions and a great success between players all over the world. [...] personality. How I saw right and wrong... Words can kill. Time and again the country was ruled by a foreign tongue. When he was a young boy he lost his native language, the bedrock for any developing child. His country, his family, his face, his identity. Everything was stolen from him. The next genre, which is the Fighting genre, has many sub-genres. The first one is the Beat'em up or Hack and Slash, we picked the game Final Fight as an example. They are games with realistic setting, both for young and teen public, easy controls Arcade-like, their story isn't relevant, they are usually single player but they can also be multi-player. As the player's actions we have hitting, dodging and using objects, and here we can see Final Fight and some of its in-game combats. Inside the Fighting genre we also have the one-on-one combats, such as Street Fighter, which was in the video we've just seen. Their setting is quite realistic, for a teen audience. The control is quite complex as we need to control all the characters' move, but they are still arcade-like, the story is secondary, and they are usually multi-player although they can also be single player. Their actions are hitting, protecting oneself, dodging and using objects. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Now let's talk about the last genre, which is also one of the most famous: the Shooter. It has three sub-genres, the first one is the First Person Shooter, mostly known as FPS. As examples we have Doom, Quake, Halo and Call of Duty, but maybe it's nostalgia what made us choose Doom, as it is one of the first FPS ever. Those games usually have a war, military or sci-fi setting, for an adult public. The controls are very hard as we have stressed battles, the story is relevant, and they are usually multi-player, with single player mode as well. As main actions we have shooting, protecting yourself, hiding, operating and solving puzzles. The video on screen is pixelated because it's the first Doom game and one of the first shooters which were released on 1990s and had a great success. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] We can see that, as it is a FPS, we can't see our main character, as it is on first person and we are looking around us through the main characters' eyes. [MUSIC] The second Shooters sub-genre is the third person shooter, we also have many examples such as Gears of War, Hitman, Max Payne or Syphon Filter. We chose Gears of War due to its great success, they have a more variate setting than the FPS, They also target a teen and adult public, the control difficulty is medium, the story is also important and they are basically single player. As the players' actions we have shooting, protecting oneself, hiding, cooperating or solving puzzles. Let's now see a video from Gears of War 3. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Unlike in the previous video, here we can see the main character, this is the idea of a third person shooter: seeing our own character from its back to have a perfect visual control and so that we can see what our character is doing at every moment. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] And as our last subgroup inside the Shooters genre we have the Shoot'em Up. We have picked Panzer Dragon as an example but we also have Space Invaders, R-type or REZ. They have a sci-fi setting for a young and teen public, a easy game control, like an arcade machine, the story plays a secondary role here, and they are usually single player but they can also be multiplayer and the players' basic actions are shooting, dodging, jumping, cooperating or solving puzzles. Here we can see the example of Panzer Dragon. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Well, we have seen different genres and some examples of the classification which may help to understand the different video game genres. We insist on the fact that a video game can have more than one genre and this classification is different for each person. As a summary we can say that the video games industry as a leisure product has been specialised, which has given place to this wide genres definition to try to give clue to the user about what is he going to play and what kind of experience will he have by playing the video game. As we said, the genres definition is subjective, it doesn't want to categorize or discriminate a video game or its audience. This wide range of genres and the great variety of video games gives a chance for video games to be classified in more than one genre. We hope you liked this second lesson and we encourage you to go on with the following lessons we are offering to you. To finish, we will quote the video games and as well their developers, and some of the references we've used to make our genres classification.
