Sales projections are a powerful tool to aid in meeting demand, allocation of resources, and driving growth for the future. Forecasting techniques can be applied to make realistic predictions of outcomes of everything from sales volume to likelihood of cold-call success given the time of the year. Other than goods that are considered, “basic necessities,” most sales data demonstrate trends based on the season—or period of time—in which they occur. There are a multitude of statistical methods that can enhance forecasting by including the factor of seasonality. This course will introduce you to making sales projections with a multiplicative seasonal model. In this course, we will review the principles of forecasting, consider use cases for forecasting with seasonality, build the seasonal index from the ground up, run a forecast with and without seasonality on sales data, and consider the next steps that could be taken with our seasonal forecast. Along the way, you will visualize the data and understand how forecasting with seasonality works. You will do this as we work side-by-side in the free-to-use software Google Sheets. By the end of this course, you will understand use cases for conducting forecasts with seasonality in your workplace and be able to confidently apply seasonality in any spreadsheet software. Note: This course works best for learners who are based in the North America region. We’re currently working on providing the same experience in other regions.
Some familiarity with spreadsheet software is helpful.
In a video that plays in a split-screen with your work area, your instructor will walk you through these steps:
Understand how making sales projections with forecasting supports decision-making and access Google Sheets.
Identify use cases for applying seasonality to sales projections.
Import data into Google Sheets.
Create a chart to visualize the data and conduct exploratory data analysis.
Add a linear regression line to charts and build a classical multiplicative model.
De-seasonalize the data, run a sales projection, and evaluate your forecast.
