Introduction to NoSQL Databases

Modern high-scale applications require moving past standard tabular schemas to match unique data shapes with optimized non-relational storage engines. This course systematically breaks down the architectural characteristics, benefits, and data modeling approaches for the four primary NoSQL taxonomies:

Document Databases (e.g., MongoDB, IBM Cloudant): Stores data in semi-structured formats like JSON or BSON documents, providing extreme flexibility for content management and e-commerce catalogs.

Wide-Column Stores (e.g., Apache Cassandra): Organizes data into dynamic rows of columns, optimized for handling massive volumes of time-series or analytical logs across distributed nodes.

Key-Value Stores: Maps unique keys to discrete data blobs, operating as a super-fast cache layer for session states and user profiles.

You will transition from high-level database architecture theory into concrete, syntax-level engineering. Through interactive hands-on lab environments, you will master the following programmatic workflows:

MongoDB: Constructing structured JSON documents, building performance-optimized indexes, writing complex pipeline aggregations, and executing core CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations, while configuring replication sets and cluster sharding for horizontal scaling.

Apache Cassandra: Accessing the cluster via the Cassandra Query Language (CQL Shell), managing decentralized keyspace operations, establishing distributed column tables, and performing high-throughput transactional queries tailored for always-available web platforms.
