About the Course

Effective altruism is built on the simple but unsettling idea that living a fully ethical life involves doing the most good one can. In this course you will examine this idea's philosophical underpinnings; meet remarkable people who have restructured their lives in accordance with it; and think about how effective altruism can be put into practice in your own life. All the features of this course are available for free. It does not offer a certificate upon completion....

Very insightful course, opened my eyes to the importance of an indepth analysis when considering charitable donations. Also introduced valuable resources when considering how and what to give.

What a wonderful course. It gives each of us a way to help in the best possible manner. One would think that only serious philanthropists can help when in fact every single person can.

To be honest, after having taken the Food Ethics course, this felt like a watered down version that didn't get fully into religions, nor it did tackle implications, both from a human and an animal perspective. It only briefly touted with effective altruism and utilitarianism, disregarding the individual motives that permeate most motivated reasoning and that currently lead to system justification and rationalisation. The course is fine as an introduction to utilitarianism and effective altruism, but it doesn't delve too deeply into questions of efficiency. It poses some minimums with the pond question, that I found lucid, and asks if we ought to follow seemingly unethical careers that gain a lot of money to donate a huge part of it. But this is no fault of its own, after all, it's a fairly old course, from 2014.

It's a bit disappointing that there is no certificate offered for the completion of this course. It is also not ideal that many of the links and articles listed are outdated or otherwise inaccessible.

I would have expected more academic background, but the course overall is very interesting.

Great information from a great thinker, though it is a bit dated.

Too much of a focus on philosophy of ethics and not enough real-world application into living an effectively altruistic life.

If you put the work in, the least that could be offered is a certificate.
