Starting your career as a fresher is an exciting time. You’re beginning your career journey, and a job role you land as a fresher can help you achieve your plans. Whether you plan on building relevant experience in your chosen field, working in a related field to improve your skills, making the first step towards securing a career with your chosen employer, or developing your abilities on the job, opportunities for freshers are available. A few attributes employers search for beyond your degree course are certifications, strong communication skills, work experience, and possibly internships.

Read further to discover who employs freshers, the types of jobs you are eligible for as a fresher, and a list of 10 jobs for freshers, including requirements, salary, and details about each role.

Do companies employ freshers?

Companies do hire freshers. In fact, according to a 2024 TeamLease Edtech Career Outlook Report, the trend is growing in India with a 3 percent increase from the previous year, and 68 percent of employers surveyed plan to hire freshers in 2024 [1].

Often, recruiters ask for experience, which can be challenging for freshers when they haven’t had much opportunity to work in their chosen industry. However, “experience” does not need to be professional experience only. You can find many other ways to gain experience and skills, including internships, volunteering, and personal projects.

Companies are attracted to freshers because they typically have mouldable, enthusiastic minds that employers can train. Some businesses are using the hire-train-deploy (HTD) strategy. This approach allows companies to train freshers with the skills they need for a job. Additionally, freshers can offer new insight and different personal experiences than someone who has worked in a job for years.

What types of jobs for freshers are available?

How to get a job as a fresher

Companies do look to hire freshers, so work on gaining experience, upgrading your skills, and making connections, which can improve your job prospects. Experience may be necessary even to acquire a job as a fresher, but remember that experience doesn’t have to be paid work. Volunteer work, internships, online training, and personal projects typically count as previous experience in your chosen profession.

Upgrade your skills

A great way to stand out in the job market as a fresher is to build on the skills you gained from your degree by continuing your learning. Take online courses, earn certifications, attend professional and networking events, and engage in personal projects. If you need more experience, personal projects are an excellent way of proving you can do the work, seeking internships and freelance work to build your experience, and learning new skills if possible.

Write a strong resume

Your resume is an important tool in securing a job as a fresher. You need a clear, concise resume that focuses on your educational achievements while highlighting your skills in your field, any experience you have gained, and any additional certifications, awards, or achievements. Make sure you tailor your resume to the role you’re applying for and that your passion shows so a recruiter can see why you are a good candidate for their job.

Network

Whether through social networking or attending in-person events, networking is an important step in finding your first job as a fresher. Career events and job fairs are an excellent way to meet potential recruiters. You can also network via LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook to connect with people in organisations you wish to work for and then move towards getting a job referral. Some companies offer their current employees bonuses for referring a new employee, so it doesn’t hurt to ask someone for a referral because others might be willing to help you get your start.
