Learn how to edit your product information in Google Merchant to include product type so you can organize your products with attributes to better understand campaign data and reach your target audience.
Product type is an attribute that you can assign to the items in your Google Merchant Center feed to help you organize products to better understand your campaign data and how users interact with your product. Using product type to define your product categories can help you to understand what is performing well. The more accurately you define your product attributes, the more successfully Google can match your ad campaigns to the right search queries.
Product type enables you to get more specific about your product because you can set what the attribute is, unlike product categories, which require you to choose from a designated hierarchy of categories.
For example, if you sell special occasion dresses for teens, the most appropriate product category would be Clothing & Accessories > Clothing > Dresses. With product type, you could use subcategories to better segment your products, such as specifying the style, material, length, or appropriate occasion to wear the dress. With subcategories, Google can deliver your ad campaign to a more targeted audience looking for your products.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to edit your Google Merchant Center product information to include product type.
In order to use the Google Merchant attribute “product type” on the items in your feed, you will need to edit the product details in your Merchant Center Account. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to get your account set up correctly:
Navigate to All Products.
Edit attribute values.
Let's look at each step in more detail:
Once you sign into your Google Merchant Center account, go to the navigation menu and click Products, then All Products. Select the product you would like to edit.
Click the pencil icon to edit the product you’ve selected. This will open a menu called Product Feed Information, which contains boxes to enter values for attributes such as brand, product type, and manufacturer part number.
Enter your desired product type into the appropriate box and click Save. Google will review your edits and update your Merchant Center feed after approval.
You can use levels to create your own hierarchy within the product type attribute. For example, in our special occasion dress example above, you might want to first separate your dresses by length, followed by material. Use the > symbol to separate levels, including all levels in the hierarchy when you enter the product type in the product information screen.
You can use product type attributes for all campaign types.
You can also use the same information for product type that you list in product category. However, for product categories you are limited to the predefined hierarchies.
In addition to product type, you can add many other additional attributes to help you sort and organize the products in your Google Merchant feed, such as:
Brand
Color
Description
Expiration date
Material
Pattern
Price
Size
