About the Course

The COVID-19 crisis has created an unprecedented need for contact tracing across the country, requiring thousands of people to learn key skills quickly. The job qualifications for contact tracing positions differ throughout the country and the world, with some new positions open to individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent. In this introductory course, students will learn about the science of SARS-CoV-2 , including the infectious period, the clinical presentation of COVID-19, and the evidence for how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person and why contact tracing can be such an effective public health intervention. Students will learn about how contact tracing is done, including how to build rapport with cases, identify their contacts, and support both cases and their contacts to stop transmission in their communities. The course will also cover several important ethical considerations around contact tracing, isolation, and quarantine. Finally, the course will identify some of the most common barriers to contact tracing efforts -- along with strategies to overcome them....

Outstanding course. Taught me the intricacies associated with contact tracing and broadened my knowledge of the DOVID-19 virus. Before taking this course there were quite a few areas in contact tracing that I did not fully understand. As a healthcare administrator for 30 years in the military, there was knowledge I already knew, but the course expanded that knowledge to bring me up to date with current language and pratices. Great job Dr. Gurley!

Excellent course, clear and comprehensive to the extent possible in this media. The examples with actors were extremely useful to give an idea of what the job of a contact tracer might entail. The slides were clear and concise. Some things I would've liked: a better way to save notes, perhaps more than one voice explaining the concepts in the videos, and some guidance at the end about where to go look for job opportunities for contact tracers.

This is an excellent course and the pace is ideal for working professionals wanting to gain insight into contact tracing. It has various approaches to learning: write-in answers, multiple choice questions, and a final assessment. I liked that one has to get a certain percentage before passing which helps one stay focused. I’m subscribing to other courses based on my pleasant experience. I highly recommend this course and Coursera! -M. Espinoza-

It was a very informative and useful course during this current pandemic of COVID-19. It is a great thing to attend a course for a recent event or issue threatens all the world and to probe all related info, skills, talents and this thorough covering, and to gain a very technical and informative experience as one of the "tracers" who are working currently in health departments. Thanks Coursera and many Thanks Emily and Johns Hopkins University!

Hi 👋

I was very informed & educated. I am a former first responder ⛑ but retirement came in just a few short weeks before this pandemic started and all the lockdowns. Although, I know we would have had some training plus enforcement training to deal with the public safety guidelines & procedures, I know a lot of the history and scientific information & research I would have missed out on if it weren’t for this course. Thank you. B. C. Rubio.

The Couse was excellent! Thank you very much! Can't say enough Thank you, for your time and energy you expended on my and others behalf.

The only parts that were troublesome was not being able to review the material easily. The other frustrating problem was the first vignette that had the scared young lady that was unable to move her mouth to speak the words seeming to be mumble. So weird the way young people speak these days. Annoying!

I found the course to be very informative in giving the history of the Coronavirus and the explanation of how it is transmitted. What I found most helpful was learning how to calculate a person's infectious period and the detailed scenarios that go into being a Contact Tracer, the required assertiveness, empathy and different type of question styles that may be used to get required information that can be so important in stopping the spread.

Excellent course for learning basic skills for contact tracing. Well organized and easy to follow. In some lectures the overuse of "so.." was distracting to the lecture flow, but not seriously. Some assessment questions relied on evaluating the category term instead of a proper checking for understanding. Overall, the checking for understanding questions during lecture videos and the final assessment was very well linked to the course goals.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course! It took me about six hours, which I felt was completely reasonable. The videos mostly kept my attention. The only area for improvement might be in the non-compliance section. Granted, utilizing Motivational Interviewing skills and notifying your supervisor might be the best front line actions. What if the case or contact still will not comply? If at all, where does law enforcement come into play?

I retook a couple of the interim quizzes, but decided to keep my score for the overall exam rather than doing it again. It enabled me to see the areas in which I need to improve. The course was fast paced (and I am a very fast note taker) and I really appreciate the opportunity to have this information and to utilize it to help others. Thanks to Dr. Gurley and Johns Hopkins for offering and conducting this course. I enjoyed it very much!

I learned so much about the natural history of the COVID-19 virus and the process of contact tracing that I feel well prepared to take on the job and help get the pandemic under control. I also learned a lot about active listening and how important it is to establish rapport and how to phrase questions and answers so that cases and contacts feel comfortable trusting me with their information. Thank you for providing this valuable resource.

classroom teaching is the best.

Sometimes it is not possible due to a lot of reason so the online class is probably the second-best.

The student is missing a lot of elements that the classroom

On line, the class should have video teaching rather than just reading the material to students. please make it more attractive to students. I can pick up a book and read, please create as much real as possible instead of boring read from the book.

It’s a great course and upon completion, I have learned a lot about how sick and asymptotic people could affect others and how it’s a CDC function to help instill safety in our communities. As a web Developer, I also learned that you cannot just build any COVID-19 Contact Tracing application without understanding the domino effect with which patient confidentiality could be at risk, especially how Americans value privacy protection laws.

I was fortunate enough to see an interview with Ms. Gurley on cable news describing contact tracing and this course and it sounded interesting so I decided to sign up. Ms. Gurley's step by step presentation is very clear and the slides are excellent.

Whether or not I wind up doing any actual contact tracing I will be grateful for the chance to further my understanding of this timely and relevent subject. Thank you for the oppuntunity!

Although I do not intend to become a COVID-19 Contact Tracer, I was very glad to be able to take the course because of the information presented. During this pandemic, I think it is important that everyone be as informed as possible in order to stay well and to avoid infecting others if we should happen to catch the disease. Thank you for your work and expertise in putting this course together. It was both informative and interesting.

Information on the disease and transmission was very clear and helpful. Actual workflow of contact tracing was less useful as it was vague and will change from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but as this will not be the bulk of my responsibility it did not matter for my needs. Course was very well put together, easy to navigate and manageable in the amount of time needed to complete. Thank you to all who were involved in its production.

This course helped me a lot to understand about COVID19 and also how important the contact tracers to stop the spread of infections. At first, I thought I could be an effective contact tracer but after getting enough information from this course, I realized that I may not be suited for the job, probably more reflection on my side. Thank you for this course, it gave a lot of information without pushing too much pressure to the students.

This training was very helpful. The teacher has a soothing and firm training voice, with excellent pausing for understanding and slow delivery for processing. The course is designed for success, and offers ample opportunity to review without negative consequences. As a retired teacher, I appreciate the professional methods and look forward to utilizing this knowledge for the betterment of my community. Thanks for making this available.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing course was very instructional and easy to follow. I enjoyed listening to Dr. Gurley's voice throughout the lessons and truly admire her expert knowledge on the subject of contact tracing and epidemiology! Other than Coursera's website being down one full day due to technical difficulties, I highly recommend this course to others. Thank you, Dr. Gurley for putting together a well-executed and informative course!
