One of the most commonly used artificial intelligence (AI) processes today is ChatGPT. The AI tool takes any prompt a user gives it and responds by doing its best to answer a question or offer an explanation using human language.

ChatGPT is the current leader in AI processes, but it’s not the only tool that users frequent. Other artificial intelligence models, such as Bing, operated by Microsoft, and Gemini, formerly known as Bard, by Google, use similar technology to generate chatbot responses and increase user productivity.

In this article, we’ll explore the jobs most exposed to ChatGPT and the capabilities and limitations of using an artificial intelligence process like ChatGPT.

The jobs most exposed to ChatGPT

The increased use of artificial intelligence programs and ChatGPT causes many jobs in the United States to become exposed to these AI tools. The following jobs are among those most exposed to ChatGPT:

Judicial law clerk

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $66,419 [1]

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor (JD) degree

As a judicial law clerk, your responsibilities include assisting judges by performing research and various organizational tasks. You'll need to study law to become a judicial law clerk, and employers typically desire both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

As a judicial law clerk, ChatGPT may be a useful tool to increase productivity and efficiency in your work. Exposure to ChatGPT can allow you to free up some time doing more tedious administrative activities, but AI itself will not likely replace the need for law clerks, as it’s not always correct in its findings and requires you to check its work for accuracy.

Accounting clerk

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $50,326 [2]

Requirements: High school diploma and training

Accounting clerks work with and for accountants to do organizational tasks, such as keeping track of tax information and entering relevant financial information into spreadsheets and databases. To become an accounting clerk, employers typically prefer training and accounting experience, while some may prefer a bachelor’s degree candidate.

Large language models such as ChatGPT currently excel in analyzing data and use automation to input numbers and data from its analysis. As an accounting clerk, your role risks minimization by the automation performed by ChatGPT. However, like a judicial law clerk, ChatGPT’s work must be double-checked for accuracy, especially regarding important tax information.

Web developer

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $77,305 [3]

Requirements: High school diploma or bachelor's degree, training, and programming knowledge

As a web developer, you work to create and maintain websites for businesses and organizations. Your responsibilities may include problem-solving any issues that may arise, designing elements of websites through programming and coding, and analyzing a website’s overall performance. Web developers typically need a computer science and programming language background and any training your specific job requires.

As a web developer, ChatGPT may serve as a helpful tool for developing website code and creating customer service chatbots. This may, in turn, help you increase productivity and allow you to focus on other tasks that artificial intelligence cannot complete, such as improving user experience directly through talking and interacting with other humans.

Customer service representative

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $41,731 [4]

Requirements: High school diploma and training

Customer service representatives problem-solve and assist individuals with answers to questions they may have about a product, service, or business. As a customer service representative, you often communicate with others via telephone or through a computer, but you might also interact with customers in person. Requirements vary depending on the job position; however, most customer service representatives need a high school diploma and relevant training to qualify for a role.

ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence language models can automate answers to frequently asked questions on a business’s website or social media channels. This automation feature can free up customer service representatives from answering repetitive questions, while human interaction is essential for interacting with disgruntled customers on an emotional and empathetic level and performing complex problem-solving.

Medical transcriptionist

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $38,454 [5]

Requirements: High school diploma and training in medical transcription coursework

As a medical transcriptionist, your daily responsibilities may involve notating doctor visits, producing written reports, and communicating directly with office patients. To become a medical transcriptionist, you typically need some type of postsecondary education, with exact qualifications varying depending on your employer.

As a medical transcriptionist, you can benefit from exposure to artificial intelligence, specifically Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). This process translates the spoken word into the written word, which makes transcribing medical reports more efficient and accurate. ChatGPT currently has the ability to transcribe both audio and video files into text.

Tax preparer

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $72,366 [6]

Requirements: High school diploma, training, and preparer tax identification number (PTIN)

Tax preparers prepare taxes for filing by handling an individual’s financial records and keeping them organized. To get a job as a tax preparer, you must have completed your high school education and necessary coursework to learn specific and relevant tax information. All tax preparers must have certification through obtaining a preparer tax identification number (PTIN), which is a credential that certifies you to prepare taxes.

As a tax preparer, you may use ChatGPT for data entry purposes when collecting tax information. Another way to utilize ChatGPT with tax preparation is by having it answer more complex questions that you may need to ask or problems you may need to work through when preparing someone’s taxes. You gain insight by learning how AI would handle the situation, and also check your work to ensure you’ve filed and prepared taxes correctly.

Telemarketer

Average annual US salary (Lightcast™): $34,618 [7]

Requirements: High school diploma

As a telemarketer, you attempt to sell products to individuals by contacting them through the telephone. Typically no formal postsecondary education requirements are necessary to become a telemarketer; however, you may need to complete training to secure a role.

Artificial intelligence and social media channels may replace the need for telemarketers as more individuals consume media through virtual applications instead of by answering the phone. Additionally, companies may use AI to create prerecorded telemarketing messages to leave for people when they answer their phones, which would erase the need for human telemarketers. However, without human telemarketers, individuals can’t ask questions or engage further with an actual person and instead may just ignore the message they receive from the company altogether.

The capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence

As artificial intelligence and large language models continue to grow, it’s important to remember the pros and cons of using it in the workplace. While artificial intelligence has many capabilities, it also has limitations to what it can and cannot produce.

AI capabilities

  • Increased productivity: Using artificial intelligence programs in the workplace often allows you to increase productivity levels because of the time that large language models such as ChatGPT may save you. AI can proofread, provide automatic responses to customer service questions and other questions, and save time on administrative tasks like data entry and bookkeeping.

  • Data analysis: Artificial intelligence analyzes data to help create codes for programming, and can also track trends found within the data entered. This saves you the time you could spend doing other aspects of your job and may help you find trends within the data that you may not have otherwise tracked.

AI limitations

  • Human empathy: ChatGPT and other large language models lack the ability to connect with humans personally. Many jobs require human connection and empathy to achieve success. As an artificial intelligence model, ChatGPT cannot forge unique human connections or show emotion.

  • Inaccuracy and misinformation: When asked a question, ChatGPT generates a response to the user that answers that question. However, this answer doesn’t always contain accurate information. One limitation of AI is that it sometimes makes up answers and provides users with false and unreliable information.
