The Innovation Imperative examines why innovation is no longer a discretionary activity but a structural necessity for organizations, industries, and professionals. Rather than treating innovation as a matter of creativity or isolated breakthroughs, the course develops a rigorous understanding of innovation as a systemic, uncertain, and organizationally embedded phenomenon. The course equips learners to diagnose different types of innovation challenges—across products, processes, services, business models, and ecosystems—and to recognize why innovation efforts often fail despite strong intent and investment. It emphasizes that innovation outcomes are shaped as much by organizational structures, incentives, power dynamics, and learning systems as by ideas or technology. Learners develop the ability to interpret change at multiple levels: within organizations, across industries, and over time. The course highlights how innovation reshapes competition, work, and value creation, and why successful responses require rethinking assumptions about customers, capabilities, and coordination. Attention is given to how innovation diffuses, how learning occurs under uncertainty, and how failure can either generate insight or be suppressed by organizational design. A central theme of the course is judgment: knowing which kind of innovation is required, which constraints matter most, and how to intervene without oversimplifying complex systems. The course avoids tool-driven prescriptions and instead builds conceptual clarity that can be applied across sectors and roles. By the end of the course, learners will be able to explain why innovation repeatedly disappoints in practice, diagnose where misalignment occurs, and reason about innovation challenges with greater precision and realism. The course prepares professionals to engage with innovation not as a buzzword, but as an ongoing managerial, strategic, and societal challenge.

This module explains innovation as a dynamic, uncertain, and systemic process rather than a linear sequence from idea to outcome. It shows how innovation emerges through experimentation, feedback, coordination across functions, and interaction with markets, regulation, and users. Learners examine why innovation rarely follows plans, why early versions often look inferior, and why learning and adaptation matter more than prediction. The module emphasizes innovation as a journey shaped by interpretation, incentives, and organizational context, helping learners move beyond simplistic “idea-to-launch” thinking toward a more realistic understanding of how innovation unfolds in practice.

9 vidéos1 lecture5 devoirs

This module will enable learners to distinguish among major types of innovation, understand how each alters value creation, and recognize why organizations often misapply the same innovation logic across different contexts.

Inclus

9 vidéos1 lecture5 devoirs

The module is designed to explain why capable, well-intentioned organizations systematically inhibit innovation, focusing on structures, incentives, power, routines, and governance.

Inclus

8 vidéos1 lecture5 devoirs

This module explains how innovation disrupts, destabilizes, and reshapes strategy. This module focuses on: 1) Why traditional strategic assumptions break down under innovation 2) Why competitive advantage becomes temporary 3) Why strategic coherence erodes even in well-managed firms 4) Why innovation creates strategic tension before strategic response is possible

This module examines how innovation unfolds differently across organizational, market, regulatory, cultural, and technological contexts. It shows why practices that succeed in one setting often fail when transferred to another without adaptation. Learners explore how sector characteristics, institutional constraints, maturity of markets, and social norms shape innovation choices and outcomes. The module compares innovation in startups versus large firms, developed versus emerging markets, and regulated versus unregulated industries. By focusing on context rather than universal recipes, the module builds judgment about when to adapt methods, when to localize solutions, and when to redesign innovation approaches altogether.

This module focuses on the role of failure as a structural feature of innovation rather than an exception. It distinguishes between productive and unproductive failure and examines how organizations convert setbacks into learning or suppress insight through blame, fear, and political dynamics. Learners analyze why post-mortems often fail, how learning loops break down, and how experimentation can be designed responsibly. The module emphasizes adaptation: how organizations revise assumptions, redesign processes, and change behavior based on evidence rather than hindsight rationalization. It builds the capability to treat failure as an input to strategic renewal rather than as a reputational threat.

This module examines the ethical and societal dimensions of innovation and the responsibilities that accompany technological and business change. It explores how innovation reshapes power, privacy, work, and inequality, and why ethical questions cannot be treated as secondary to performance or growth. Learners analyze how incentives, regulation, and organizational choices influence whether innovation produces broad social benefit or concentrated harm. Special attention is given to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, where speed of deployment often outpaces governance and moral reflection. The module develops the capacity to evaluate innovation not only by what is possible, but by what is legitimate, sustainable, and socially accountable.

8 vidéos1 lecture5 devoirs

This module explores how the future of innovation is shaped not only by technological advances, but by human judgment, institutional choices, and social priorities. It examines how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms alter work, competition, and value creation under conditions of deep uncertainty. Rather than predicting specific outcomes, the module focuses on how organizations and professionals can reason about alternative futures and make responsible choices in the present. Learners analyze how narratives, assumptions, and power influence which innovations are pursued and which are constrained. The emphasis is on agency: innovation futures are not inevitable, but actively constructed through strategic, ethical, and policy decisions.

Inclus

Enable learners to integrate insights from innovation theory, organizational dynamics, technology, ethics, and uncertainty into a coherent professional identity—one that remains relevant, reflective, and contributive in innovation-intensive environments.
