As someone of Ukrainian descent, I have been educated about Ukraine and the Holodomor from an early age. However, this course put everything into a much deeper context. It helped me understand how the arts, culture, civil society, farmers, workers, and peasants all endured and persisted, despite the autocratic regime behind the famine. This course also helped contextualize, from a global perspective, the impact of the genocide and the importance of remembering and advancing the historical knowledge of what happened in Ukraine. It made clear how the events in Ukraine remain relevant in today’s global context, and that we are still learning about what took place through ongoing research and collective memory. The course was well thought out, interesting, and skillfully merged multiple perspectives. It helped weave together various themes, creating a broader picture and a deeper understanding of famine as a form of genocide. The course examined the arts and culture of the times and the impacts that Ukrainians had across Europe. I highly recommend that every individual take this course. It is well worth the time and effort to learn and understand.

This course was truly a meaningful learning experience. I loved that not only were facts and statistics used, but also art, poetry, videos, and eyewitness accounts. I think that anyone who teaches a course on genocide, or anyone who is interested in imperial famines, or in the history of Ukraine , would benefit greatly from taking this course. When I was young, studying in England in 1981-2, in an academic library I found a thesis upon the Holodomor. It was enough to whet my appetite for more information. This course has been a fabulous resource for more in-depth information, providing links to research and knowledge documented since the 1980s.

Informative course on the genocide committed by Stalin and the Soviet Regime of Ukrainians in Ukraine in 1933-34. 7 Million Ukrainians perished because the Soviet Regime forcibly stole their food, livestock, land, farms, possessions and murdered their leaders and important community members.

This is a very important and informative course that spreads the word about a topic not widely known outside of the Ukrainian diaspora. By studying the Holodomor, one can better understand the current struggles and determination of the Ukrainian people.

I enjoyed the pace and the interaction. It was easy to hold my attention and I was engrossed in most of the modules. It was put together really well, and did not drag on like other courses I have participated in.

Once more,I have benefited from a Coursera free online course. At 80 years of age and wishing to continue to learn I find the courses offered, including this one to be both beneficial and enjoyable.
