There are 4 modules in this course

This module examines how bacteria and their viruses regulate gene expression. You will analyze negative and positive regulation in the lac system, dual regulation in the arabinose operon, attenuation, bacteriophage life cycles, and alternative sigma factors. By working with lac-operator and lac-repressor mutations, you will connect regulatory components to predicted patterns of gene expression.

What's included

7 readings14 assignments

This module explores how transcription is regulated in eukaryotes through transcription factors, chromatin structure, and epigenetic mechanisms. You will examine Gal4 regulation of galactose-metabolizing genes, the modularity of regulatory proteins, three-dimensional chromosome organization, chromatin remodeling, and cytosine methylation. By the end of the module, you will be able to explain how regulatory proteins and chromatin states control eukaryotic transcription.

What's included

4 readings8 assignments

This module examines the genetic control of development through the genetic approach and the developmental toolkit. You will follow how spatial and post-transcriptional regulation shape Drosophila development and consider how individual toolkit genes contribute to diverse structures and disease. By the end of the module, you will be able to connect gene regulation, developmental patterning, and developmental outcomes.

What's included

7 readings14 assignments

This module introduces genomes, genome sequencing, and the use of bioinformatics to extract meaning from genomic data. You will examine the structure of the human genome, comparative and functional genomics, direct-to-consumer genetic testing, and applications to human medicine. You will also work with methods including yeast two-hybrid systems, ChIP, next-generation sequencing, and RNA-Seq.
