About the Course

The focus and themes of the Introduction to Calculus course address the most important foundations for applications of mathematics in science, engineering and commerce. The course emphasises the key ideas and historical motivation for calculus, while at the same time striking a balance between theory and application, leading to a mastery of key threshold concepts in foundational mathematics. Students taking Introduction to Calculus will: • gain familiarity with key ideas of precalculus, including the manipulation of equations and elementary functions (first two weeks), • develop fluency with the preliminary methodology of tangents and limits, and the definition of a derivative (third week), • develop and practice methods of differential calculus with applications (fourth week), • develop and practice methods of the integral calculus (fifth week)....

I have completed quite a few courses on Coursera. This is by far the best instructor. I really hope David is going to do teach another Coursera course soon - I will sign up regardless of the content!

I've complited 50% of the course and now I'm thinking to drop it. There are some reasons to do it. Firstly, the materials are vague, lectures are messy and professor tries to cover too many different topics with no profound explanation. Secodly, during the course I was made to read extra materials to find answers for my questions. I'm really disappointed :(

4 stars because precalculus part is good enough.

I did not put my hands on mathematics for a long time. The Intorduction to Calculus course has helped me regain my fundamentals of mathematics. I recommend this course for those who are looking forward to taking difficult courses (such as Vector Calculus, Differentail Equations, and Matrix Algebra) because this course builds a basic knowledge for students.

Good review of introductory calculus. Lecture materials and notes are a little bit spotty for people who are new to calculus - I found myself supplementing with some additional online resources and my old calc I textbook) -- but the material is presented well and I learned some things that I missed when I took calculus in school many years ago.

Instructor was great, notes and videos were helpful. Would help if there was a set of solutions for each quiz, but the instructor does a great job of explaining any problems. Sometimes, my screen would go black when I paused a video, which made it difficult to follow along in challenging exercises, but overall was a solid course.

Interesting and clear instruction, with a fair balance of basic and challenging review quiz problems. The (relative) brevity of the course meets the objectives of an introduction, and the clarity of instruction leaves one wishing for greater breadth and depth...

Very participant-friendly course with excellent teaching and gradual difficulty adding, but some parts seem to be too basic, especially for Chinese students in the pre-calculus part, which undermines the efficiency of teaching.

The instructor and pace is perfect for a refresher course. the material is broken into tolerable chunks of information. You don't have to remember everything at once, just a little at a time. I really like this.

excellent review of major concepts. some of it required multiple viewings, but otherwise, it was fine.

Well constructed with useful information and a good lecturer. Was very fast paced however, and struggled grasping key concepts that were important to deeply understand before moving on to future topics due to the overall speed of the course. In summary, a good course.

The title of the course is a bit deceiving because it assumes the student has some familiarity with calculus. My advice is that if you don't already have some knowledge of both differential and integral calculus, this course is definitely not for you.

The dude lectures and explains like he's got a date waiting for him and he's running an hour late.

Personally didn't like the course due to the format of explanation - the person who explains the simplest concepts formulates the explanation in a fairly lengthy way. I'd rather to find some textbook and go that way than listening to stretched lectures like that.

Dear David, I am impressed by the progression of the learning content in this course. The deductive mediation of the content in the videos is perfectly interlinked with the worksheets, exercises and final quizzes. At no point, the explanations skipped a piece of knowledge without which the content could not be understood - remarkable! The graphics of the videos were pleasant, and the cuts were (almost always) well-paced. I cherish the handwritten and personal style very much and countless colored visualizations helped me along the way. The instructor also replied personally to my contributions/questions in the discussion forum. Thank you. It took me five months to complete the course, during which I usually worked all seven days of the week. Overall, I would estimate my personal time count to be 240 hours. In it I include the time that I spent on the repetition and creation of my own notes and also the time necessary to revisit faulty exercises and quizzes a second, third, ..., n-th ( ;-) time. As an improvement, I would like the percentage of the course to establish itself in processing the practice quizzes. It is very frustrating to not even make one percent "progress" after hours of work. Overall, I feel well-prepared for my next endeavors. This course leaves me stunned, curious and above all: grateful. I wish you all the best, Andreas

My last attempt at learning math ended over two decades ago with a high school algebra course, and up until this course I thought that calculus would be out of reach for me. Not only did completing this course provide me with skills and ways of thinking I previously considered unattainable, but it empowered me with confidence to continue on in my studies. Professor Easdown is passionate about the subject and this is obvious through his nuanced and detailed lessons and their structure, his way of speaking regarding mathematics, and through his willingness to engage with students in the comments and discussion forums. As someone with a very limited technical background I found this course as challenging as I found it rewarding. I highly recommend brushing up on, or even taking a non-intensive algebra course prior to this introduction to calculus, so you can have some algebraic skills at the tips of your fingers. I also recommend reading all the discussion material for each module, not just to help you solve the quiz problems.

I had not taken a math course in almost 20 years. The explanations are great and clear, I found the animations in the videos useful to make concepts and algebraic manipulations clearer. The notes for each lesson also helped me to understand the concepts at a deeper level. This course requires many hours of hard work to solve the problems and pass the quizzes, and I could feel my abilities growing increasingly. I feel ready to take more advanced math courses and I end this course with a very good understanding of the basic principles. The professor is great! Very encouraging and passionate about math. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn Calculus, it's a gentle introduction. Be patient with yourself if you haven't learned math in a long time. You can do it!

This course briefly introduces Calculus. Before I've entered this program I always think that calculus is boring and useless. The Professor is very good at explaining and I now I've already know the basics of calculus and ready to dive in more advanced courses. This course provides a really good opportunity to learn, It's lectures is fun, it's notes is full of useful details and the exercises are really beneficial. Actually I'd prefer the professor to speak a bit loudly. If you can't hear him talking you can look at the accompanying notes. I'd highly recommend this course to others. Lastly I will say a sincerely thanks to the professor, my tutor, my parents and my students for helping me build up the idea of calculus.

One of the best courses i took on the platform, too many good things can't mention them all, but the methodology used in this course is perfect: in each section, he gives u an introduction from the real world so u get the value of the thing u r gonna study now, then proofs whith u the basic rules of the concept, then walk through 1-2 long examples, and keeps the rest in the amazing notes. This way was more than awsome to understand each and any concept in all the lectures, i am curently ahd my licence diplome in Computer Sceince and studied calculus 1-2 in the 1st year but still got ton of information from this course that i didn't get from 2 semesters of calculus in my university.

I have gone through Calculus 1 and 2 at university many years ago, and wanted a refresher. What I got was much more: a new perspective on the material with a sense of discovery I had never experienced before. Professor Easdown has organized and presented this at times challenging topic with great clarity, eloquence, and enthusiasm. I am now more than caught up on what I once learned, and I look forward to continuing my personal exploration of this fascinating and very useful branch of mathematics. And should Professor Easdown ever develop other online courses, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to enroll.
