Water Supply and Sanitation Policy in Developing Countries Part 2: Developing Effective Interventions
Water Supply and Sanitation Policy in Developing Countries Part 2 is our second MOOC in a two-part sequence, and looks at ‘Developing Effective Interventions’. Here we invite you to develop analytical skills and deep understanding about a complex, controversial policy problem – one with no simple, easy answers. About half a billion people on our planet still lack access to improved water supplies and about two billion do not have improved sanitation services, leading to an unknown but very large number of avoidable deaths each year from water-related diseases. Millions of dollars are spent on avoidable health care expenditures, and people – mostly women – spend many billions of hours carrying water from sources outside the home. Reducing these costs is a major global challenge for us all in the 21st century. Join us to explore the challenging and complex political, economic, social, and technical dimensions of the policy interventions that donors, national governments and water utilities use to address this challenge. This second MOOC consists of the following seven sessions: • Session 1: Introduction and how our ‘ancient instincts’ affect water policy interventions. • Session 2: Planning better policy interventions: Roles, features and examples of planning protocols. • Session 3: Water pricing, tariff design and subsidies. • Session 4: Providing information to households and communities to improve water and sanitation conditions. • Session 5: Changing the institutions that deliver water and sanitation services: Privatization in developing countries. • Session 6: Changing institutions: Lessons from the UK water privatization story. • Session 7: Changing institutions: Improving regulation of the water and sanitation sector. Your instructors for this course have worked in and studied this sector for many years. Professor Dale Whittington has worked on water and sanitation policy and planning issues for over 40 years in more than two dozen low and middle-income countries. Dr Duncan Thomas has worked in the UK and European water sectors for 15 years, focusing on overcoming barriers to technological, organizational, regulatory and policy innovations. Reviewed Sep 3, 2019Each country has own setup and the demand is largely based on climatic condition and other external and family internal needs. First thing the European model of privatization suggest that State government is shedding responsibilities towards the fundamental needs of the citizens of their countries and by large making every think privatization. This not replicable model all over the World - what the current course is propagating to do so. As per the ?united Nation Fundamental rights and even for each countries, the State is responsible for the basic needs of their citizen. So WB or ADB or else international agencies should also look on these major aspects and try to provide the desired service under the fedral law of the country by the country's governing government.
I think the Part one was much better than Part II

Reviewed Jul 10, 2020It is an essential course for anyone who wants to have a global view on water supply and treatment. I really enjoyed the interview with Professor Allan's. I can't help saying that I preferred the course 1 "Water Supply and Sanitation Policy in Developing Countries Part 1: Understanding Complex Problems". In this part 2 the solutions that are given to solve the problems are more abstract than concrete. In a way, the course from week 1 to 7 suggests that the waters must be privatized. I didn't like the "black cat and white cat" analogy. I did not like the fact that you invited an economist who said that it is not necessary to be an expertise in waters to regulate waters. (but it turned out to be necessary information to understand the world we live in). Honestly, throughout week 7 of the course I thought I was going to make a very average assessment of the course. In the end, the brilliant interview with Professor Allan's made me change my mind and I think the 4/5 score is more than deserved. In general I liked the course and I think you should continue to do this work. (Don't be upset about my honesty, but I needed to be honest). In an upcoming edition I suggest that you try to find ways to improve public utilities.

I rate this course, both part 1 and part 2 very highly. Both in terms of presentation and course content.
My knowledge have vastly improved in terms of water, sanitation and hygiene with regards to the developing counties.
I would like to know what other courses you provide in terms of water sanitation and hygiene at a higher level.
I came to the course with some knowledge of water, sanitation and hygiene and leave this course with high level of global deficiencies and improvement of many developing counties.
