In this specialization, learners improved their ability to communicate clearly in English by becoming aware of and practicing many elements of American English pronunciation. These included accurate production of consonant and vowel sounds and the ability to distinguish between pairs of sounds that are often confused, along with the “musical” aspects of pronunciation (suprasegmental features). Understanding and using these features improves a speaker’s ability to be understood and to understand others in authentic oral communication. Learners also mastered strategies for continuing to improve the intelligibility and fluency of their pronunciation throughout their lives. They completed a capstone project at the end of the specialization in which they put to use all that they had learned.
