Installing and configuring a Windows Server role is a foundational system administration skill, and it starts with seeing a server for what it is: a platform that does nothing for anyone until a capability is deliberately added to it. This module builds practical Windows Server administration skills — server roles and features, role installation, and file services configuration — for systems administrators, IT operations, help desk, infrastructure support, and server support staff. Learners distinguish an operating system platform from an installable server role, add the File and Storage Services role, and confirm it by querying the host rather than trusting a confirmation screen. They then publish a network file share whose access list is restricted to the group that needs it, and record why the capability was added. Throughout, the module connects hands-on role installation and share configuration to the security principle of least functionality and to configuration management, so that a server's capabilities can be justified, reviewed, and reproduced by another administrator.

Understanding directory services and identity structure is a foundational systems administration skill, and it begins with a change in how access is read: a right is not something a person holds, but something granted once — to a group or to a container — that reaches a person by the route they arrive through. This module builds practical skills in Active Directory and directory services — domains, organizational units, security groups, group scope, and delegated administration — for systems administrators, IT operations, help desk, infrastructure support, and identity and access staff. Learners model a second site’s identity structure so that a single grant serves every future member, distinguish a group’s membership from its scope, and read where a delegated right stops when an account moves between groups or between containers. Throughout, the module connects hands-on directory design to identity management and account management practice, so that access can be granted once, administered deliberately, and accounted for afterward — not merely who holds a right, but where it came from.

Managing servers remotely is a core systems administration skill, and it rests on one distinction most newcomers have never had to draw: the difference between a machine you can reach on the network and a machine you can actually administer. This module builds practical skills in remote server management and remote administration — management consoles, snap-ins, browser-based gateways, and the single management channel they all depend on — for systems administrators, IT operations, help desk, infrastructure support, and anyone who maintains servers they cannot sit in front of. Learners bring one server to a state where it can be administered from anywhere, enable and authorize a management channel by a route that does not depend on the channel itself, and tell a reachable server from a manageable one. Throughout, the module connects hands-on remote management to the practice of documenting and authorizing every way a system may be reached from elsewhere — so that access is not merely switched on, but recorded, permitted, and accounted for afterward.

Turning a repetitive administrative routine into a repeatable, shareable script is a core IT systems administration and automation skill, and it begins with one idea that has nothing to do with memorizing commands: in an object-oriented command shell, a command hands the next one a set of objects rather than a page of text, so whatever narrows that set decides exactly what the next command acts on, while the action itself names nothing. This module builds practical skills in Windows PowerShell, command-line automation, and task automation for Windows systems administration — running cmdlets, joining commands with the pipeline, filtering structured objects, understanding the execution policy that decides whether a saved script runs, and saving a working sequence into a file that describes itself to whoever opens it next. Learners run a short command sequence against a Windows system, predict which objects an unchanged action applies to as a filter is added or removed, and produce a saved, self-documenting script — the automation and scripting skills that let one operator make a routine check dependable, repeatable, and something a colleague can run, for systems administrators, IT operations, help desk, and infrastructure support.
