What you'll learn

  • Deploy the Crossplane control plane via Helm and configure cloud Providers using Provider Configs and InjectedIdentity.

  • Use the Crossplane CLI to interact with, provision, and debug live control plane components and managed resources.

  • Architect custom infrastructure APIs by defining and deploying Composite Resource Definitions (XRDs).

  • Build multi-resource Compositions with pipeline-mode Composition Functions to enable self-service IDP workflows.

There are 2 modules in this course

Crossplane, an open-source CNCF project, extends the Kubernetes API model to external cloud resources, eliminating separate Infrastructure as Code (IaC) toolchains to turn your cluster into a universal control plane. In this module, you will immediately install Crossplane via Helm, verify system Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), and use the Crossplane CLI. You will configure cloud infrastructure providers, establish secure credentials via the InjectedIdentity pattern, and manage native Kubernetes resources like Namespaces and ConfigMaps to observe continuous reconciliation. By the end, you will run a fully operational control plane, understanding how Crossplane tracks, provisions, and reconciles external cloud components using native Kubernetes manifests.

This module leverages Crossplane's abstraction and composition capabilities to advance your skills from provisioning individual resources to architecting robust, self-service infrastructure platforms for an Internal Developer Platform (IDP). You will master Composite Resource Definitions (XRDs) to define enterprise-ready infrastructure API contracts for developers, hiding cloud complexity. You will also implement Crossplane Compositions in pipeline mode, combining multiple managed resources into a unified, versionable, and centrally governed blueprint. Next, you will use containerized Composition Functions, configuring Patch and Transform to apply dynamic data transformations and patch techniques to managed resources. The module culminates in a Role Play activity — IDP Blueprinting: Designing the Self-Service Developer API — where you will design a real-world platform API, simulating governance and architectural decisions as a Platform Engineer.
