Chuck is a very experienced teacher and his explanations are clear and he seems to really be passionate about what he's doing. That passion is contagious and the learner is likely to be eager to learn as well. The video classes are very illustrative and the pace is perfect for me. The quizzes always have to do with material covered in the classes and the exercises are as hands-on as it can be with PostgreSQL. That should be a good benchmark to what a MOOC and an instructor can be. Congratulations to Chuck and the University of Michigan.

This course is helping me right now at work, trying to do database design for multiple projects (with no CS background 😎). Great learning. I only gave 4 stars because I feel the queries could have been introduced more gently. I had no issues as I already have some experience with SQL, but I can see how someone who comes into this course with zero knowledge of how to write SQL queries could struggle.

Good introduction to PostgreSQL. Version 11.x of PostgreSQL server is used in this course. SELECT DML, INSERT DML, and CREATE TABLE DDL are covered in all the four modules constituting this course. PostgreSQL interactive terminal program `psql' is given preference which helps learners to connect and manipulate data stored in PostgreSQL hosted on public cloud providers. I used Fedora Workstation KDE 43 and psql to complete this course. I would request Dr. Chuck to upgrade the version of PostgreSQL used from 11.x to 18.x

I finished this course in 4-6 hours with many breaks. I don't say that to brag but to give you an idea if you already have experience in MS SQL like I do. It's a good refresher course but I still learned a lot. I particularly like the brief lecture on the history. I liked it enough to go through the second course of the specialization also and maybe, MAYBE ... I will also do the 3rd and 4th course. I definitely like the instructor. His explanations were clear, and he made the class very interesting.

A really helpful and great course on DB design and basic SQL. I would recommend reading the basics of SQL before signing up. Overall, I would highly recommend it!

The videos and explanations are of great quality, although the first chapter is more of a history lesson than anything. In my opinion, the time needed to complete this course should be adjusted down and more exercises/material should be added, including some read operations from globally shared tables, which will probably be the main objective of a person using SQL anyway. Many assignments had 1h estimated time yet could be completed in 5 or so minutes...

Really great course in understanding SQL and Relational Databases in the abstract. Charles Severence goes into detail about the history of Relational Databases and why and how they are used, and provides lots of knowledge around using the tools and best practices for them. Highly recommend along with his course Python for Everybody - which also touches on SQL (using SQLite).

Excellent introduction. A passionate instructor who can clearly explain the important concepts. Nice balance between explaining theory and showing practical use. The exercises are quite easy but you can use the provided materials to practically explore the subject on your own which is nice. I will definitely continue with the entire specialization. Dr. Charles is one of the best instructors out there. He is funny, makes you understand, shows his mistakes in the video, and gives you susubtle hints in the video to make sure you understand the material better. This course will give you just the basics of SQL for postgres, which is what we all need.

Spot-on paced, clear explanations with resonable level of abstraction, and self-contained. Really above the average of MOOCs. Assignments could have been more callenging, but I suspect they're going to get more challenging on the next courses of the specialization. So, overall a five star course.

If you have done the python for everybody specialization, this course would be very easy for you. One to many relations, many to many relations, CRUD concepts were already taught there. I felt like I am watching the same video. Assignments were easy, so recommending this course.

The instructor is great and his passion for the topic is palpable. I would have prefered a more simple and direct practice/grading method than the one used, but after setting everything up and figuring out how it works it is more than manageable and something useful to learn

Dr Chuck is an awesome educator, personally, I believe you need a little background in SQL before taking this course. Using PSQL on Linux rather than PgAdmin might intimidate first-timers who are used to a graphical user interface. Great resource!
