Learning Experience Design: Orientation to the Profession
In Orientation to the Profession, you’ll be introduced to the “big ideas” of LXD. Begin with the essential aspects of the design process, from ideation to evaluation. During this section, you’ll also take a brief look at learning theories and design frameworks that help LXDs move from an initial concept to a completed course. Examine the instructional triangle to identify productive interactions in support of learning, and understand how technology can be used throughout the design process and by learners during the course. Gain insight into the foundational ideas of inclusive design and study principles of Universal Design for Learning. Finally, you’ll hear from several learning professionals, as you situate yourself in the field and start to map your own career path. This course will include an immersive activity where you can experience what it is like to join a project team as a new learning experience designer. By participating in this orientation, you’ll gain an appreciation for the creativity and complexity of the profession, and be well-positioned to continue on in the series. For teachers in the state of Michigan: This series, "An Introduction to Learning Experience Design (LXD)," is approved in the state of Michigan for a maximum of 44.5 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) for teachers. The successful completion of all 3 courses in the series will be required to claim SCECHs.

It’s the librarian you didn’t know you needed. Suddenly, all those cryptic signs about learner-centered design, inclusive practices, and fancy tools like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) start to make sense. What I loved was how it made LXD feel less like rocket science and more like a messy-but-awesome art project. You learn about designing for all kinds of learners, using tech that doesn’t just sit there looking shiny but actually works. Also, the reflective exercises? It’s like the course held up a mirror and said, “Hey, what do YOU want to do with all this?”—which, let’s be honest, is kind of scary but also motivating. By the end, I felt like I could walk into a design meeting and not only hold my own but maybe even impress the room. If you’re curious about how to blend creativity, tech, and actual human empathy in learning design, this is the course for you. Also, you’ll look way smarter casually dropping “UDL” into conversations. 10/10 would recommend.

Reviewed Jun 15, 2026I am really disappointed in this course. I don't feel I can even get through Module 1. As a student with ADHD I am finding their first video difficult to navigate: it's lists and "hats" and "nouns" and "verbs" and for a course that is meant to TEACH how to be "accessible" to ALL students, it is very confusing and rather intimidating. According to the professors, an LXD must be 1) an educator 2) a designer 3) a project manager 4) a technologist. That alone is all they needed to write in the summary of the course.
