Very informative and inspiring course in rapid prototyping.

In the Rapid Prototyping and Tooling specialization, students learn how to make effective prototypes. Why is rapid prototyping important, and how does it facilitate the overall engineering design process? At what point in the process should rapid prototyping be employed? How can electronics bring a prototype to the next level? When is it appropriate to make a prototype out of cardboard rather than aluminum? When should you use 3D printing instead of a laser cutter? Real examples provide answers to questions like these and highlight best practices on when to use different materials and manufacturing equipment. You can see an overview of the specialization from Dr. Frank here.

This course was excellent. As a novice engineer with aquatic therapy design ideas, I was feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about where to start. Having the design process explained in this manner was reassuring. My sketches are right on track with the preliminary stages of the design process. I'm working on accepting the fact that failure is an inevitable part of the process. Sometimes I get in my head too much and think, "this design will be way too complicated," or "it's easier just to have a human therapist do this." I think this will be a long-term project and it's true that my ideas are based on the techniques that human therapists perform but I think it's important to have automated mechanical devices that can emulate the same work in order to deliver the therapy to a greater number of people. Thank you!

This is an excellent concise introduction to a general method of the engineering design process using prototypes. It provided me with valuable insights and a review on how to approach my own personal projects and how AutoCAD might assist me. Initially, I assumed that AutoCAD is the first tool to be used, but now I understand the significance of mock-ups, sketches, and prototypes before using AutoCAD. This is an introductory course, so if you’re seeking something more specific, such as training, it might not be the most suitable option for you. However, if you’re someone who wants to delve deeper and need a solid foundation and comprehensive overview, this course will be an excellent introduction to how to approach certain challenges and complete the process of your work.
