What is the probability of experiencing a big earthquake? Where will it occur and what can we do to be prepared? This specialization investigates the causes and effects of earthquakes. Across all courses, you will explore why and where earthquakes occur, how seismic waves travel, and how scientists measure, mitigate, and forecast seismic hazards. It explores tectonic plate motion, frictional faulting, earthquake triggering, wave propagation, earthquake damage, earthquake-related hazards, human-induced earthquakes, and much more. We will look at practical hazard mitigation strategies related to building designs, earthquake forecasting, and earthquake early warning.
Applied Learning Project
Across the Specialization, you will complete quizzes, math checks, and applied activities that use tools and examples such as the IRIS Earthquake Browser, Google Earth earthquake location, earthquake rate calculations, geologic history from rocks, induced seismicity analysis, and a personal earthquake preparedness and safety plan.
