By the end of this course, you will (1) perform Gua Sha techniques safely and effectively and (2) understand their therapeutic applications across traditional and modern contexts. Guided by Dr. Constance Bradley, you’ll explore the origins, theory, and mechanisms of this ancient scraping therapy. Each module combines historical insight with hands-on demonstration, teaching how to treat pain, inflammation, and tension using appropriate pressure and tools.

There are 4 modules in this course
Module 1 introduces the foundation of Gua Sha and provides the theoretical understanding needed before applying the technique. The instructor explains the historical origins of Gua Sha in Traditional East Asian Medicine and how the modality has evolved into a modern manual therapy used for musculoskeletal pain and functional recovery. Learners are guided through the key physiological principle of raising “sha,” the visible sign of stagnation being released through increased microcirculation and improved tissue glide. The module explains the relationship between blood flow, fascia, and stagnation, and how Gua Sha influences autonomic regulation and pain modulation. You will learn how to identify where treatment is indicated based on palpation, blanching, and visual tissue response. By the end of this module, learners will understand what Gua Sha is, why it works, and how to identify when it is likely to be an effective therapeutic intervention.

This module explains the physiological effects that occur during and after Gua Sha treatment. You’ll learn how Gua Sha increases local microcirculation, influences fascial glide, and activates the body’s natural healing response — including autonomic down-regulation and pain modulation. Through clear explanations and real examples, this session helps you understand why visible tissue changes occur and how they relate to improved function and reduced discomfort.

Module 2 is a practical, hands-on demonstration of how to perform Gua Sha on the body. The instructor begins by teaching the blanching test to determine whether stagnation is present and if Gua Sha is an appropriate treatment choice. Learners then observe how to apply Gua Sha along the body regions that correspond to the path of Qi, followed by local treatment of the symptomatic area. The demonstration shows how to hold the Gua Sha tool at the correct angle, how to anchor the skin with the supporting hand, and how to choose the right level of pressure. Tool selection is covered in depth, including the differences between horn, bone, metal, gemstone, and ceramic tools, and how shape influences contact and efficiency. This module gives learners the confidence to select tools, assess tissue, and apply Gua Sha effectively in a clinical setting.
