Paul Aylin

Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health

Bio

Paul Aylin is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London. He is co-director of the new online Global Master of Public Health launched on the Coursera platform this year and director of Postgraduate Taught Courses at the School. After his medical training, he specialised in Public Health and spent three years at the Office for National Statistics as a Medical Statistician before coming to Imperial in 1997. Paul leads a team of researchers investigating variations in performance and safety in healthcare delivery. His current research focuses on exploring variations in indicators of quality and safety using routinely collected administrative data including: out of hours hospital mortality; safety indicators in primary care; continuous monitoring of performance and safety; casemix adjustment; cancer care and indicators for delayed diagnosis. Paul leads a research theme within the NIHR funded Patient Safety Translational Research Centre around avoiding deterioration and delays in the care of patients with complex needs. He leads work on data linkage and surveillance within the NIHR funded Imperial Health Protection Research Unit for Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance.
