Medicine in 1970. He then spent three years active duty in the Air Force, training in San Antonio and serving as a flight surgeon in Kansas City. A close friend and fellow physician in the Air Force then led him to California where he spent the next 25 years practicing in emergency rooms and urgent care clinics in the Monterey Bay area. The idea for an undergraduate course in medicine began in 2001. The first rendition was produced in 2017 at UC Santa Cruz with collaborator Grant Hartzog, a professor of Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology. A grant from the University of California system in 2019 allowed the creation of an online version of the course which is now available at all ten UC campuses.
