This interdisciplinary course equips students and professionals with the theoretical frameworks and practical skills needed to navigate complex conflicts, negotiate effectively, and manage crises in diverse contexts. Through a blend of academic rigor and real-world case studies, participants will explore leadership dynamics, mediation strategies, gender inclusivity, and democratic governance in crisis scenarios. The course is structured across five immersive modules, each addressing critical dimensions of modern conflict and crisis management.
In this module, you will learn about the varying connotations of peace, conflict, and war. You will understand the connotation of peace that every age has its particular kind of war, with its own limiting conditions and its own particular pre-conceptions. You will be able to acknowledge the Grey Zone Conflict and examine the role and nuances of leadership with a special focus on ’Societies in Transition.’ Further, you will be able to understand the various nuances of conflict prevention. You gain insights into the important role played by the UN, including its peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions. Lastly, you will explore the nature and character of war, the seven distinct ways in which the parties can live with or dissolve their incompatibility, and the theme of peace building. You will also learn about the framework of negotiations and negotiation techniques. You will gain an understanding of track-II diplomacy and mediation/third-party involvement and complexity in international negotiations. You will gain insights into human rights and international law. You will also be introduced to the aspects of disarmament and arms control. Finally, you will be able to understand the process of negotiation.
