Frequently asked questions

While not strictly required, completing Statistics and Data Analysis with Excel: Essentials — or having equivalent knowledge — is strongly recommended. This Intermediate course assumes you are already familiar with descriptive statistics, the normal distribution, and one-sample hypothesis testing (Z-tests and t-tests). Learners without this background may find the pace challenging from the start.

You'll work with PivotTables and Pivot Charts for data summarisation, Chi-square tests for categorical data, two-sample t-tests and paired t-tests for comparing means, F-tests for comparing variances, and correlation and simple regression for modelling relationships and making forecasts. Excel's Data Analysis ToolPak is used throughout to support and streamline these analyses.

The techniques covered — PivotTable reporting, hypothesis testing, and regression modelling — are directly applicable to roles including data analyst, business analyst, financial analyst, research analyst, operations manager, and HR analytics professional. These skills are particularly valuable in industries where data-informed decisions are expected but advanced programming knowledge is not required.

Simple regression is a statistical method that models the relationship between two variables — one that you want to predict (the outcome) and one that drives it (the predictor). In this course, you'll build regression models in Excel, interpret the line of best fit, generate forecasts, and use regression t-tests to evaluate whether the relationship is statistically significant. These are core skills for any data-facing role.

This course combines rigorous statistical methods with practical Excel application — using the Data Analysis ToolPak alongside hands-on workbooks and real-world scenarios. Unlike general Excel courses, the focus here is specifically on statistical inference and predictive modelling. Unlike programming-based statistics courses, all analysis is done in Excel, making the skills immediately applicable for professionals who work in spreadsheet environments every day.

Each week includes short instructional videos, a downloadable Excel workbook to practise in, toolbox summary references, a dialogue activity that applies concepts to realistic scenarios, a graded "Test Yourself" assignment, and a practice assignment you can use to build confidence. The course closes with a final assignment that draws on all four core modules.

To access the course materials, assignments and to earn a Certificate, you will need to purchase the Certificate experience when you enroll in a course. You can try a Free Trial instead, or apply for Financial Aid. The course may offer 'Full Course, No Certificate' instead. This option lets you see all course materials, submit required assessments, and get a final grade. This also means that you will not be able to purchase a Certificate experience.
