Master a foundational conceptual toolkit for the moving image through the CalArts approach—a signature pedagogy that prioritizes the artistry of film form over simple technical production. This specialization moves beyond recording reality to explore the deliberate construction of time, space, composition, and sequence. Across three foundational courses, you will develop a professional visual vocabulary for shot design, movement, and Montage Theory to create artistic, high-impact cinematic work.
Applied Learning Project
Through a series of directed short video projects, you will apply formal cinematic principles to develop a personal filmmaking practice and a unique artistic vision. By constructing original sequences, you will solve the "authentic problem" of creating visual meaning, synthesizing composition, temporal rhythm, and montage to establish a deliberate viewer experience.
