After you enroll, begin with Module 1, "Introduction to the Entire Course," which takes about an hour. It has a short welcome video, readings on how to use the course, and a 20-minute Pre-Course Diagnostic: Communication Readiness Self-Assessment. The diagnostic shows where your communication skills stand today and builds a recommended learning path, and it doesn't restrict access to any module. From there, work through Modules 2 to 5, then finish with Module 6's communication plan for a real conversation.

No single course is best for everyone. Look for one that matches your level and has you practice with feedback. Communication Skills For Dummies is a communication skills course with 13 assignments, and each of its four thematic modules has a peer-reviewed hands-on activity. Examples are a conversation intention plan, a listening and rapport practice log, a difficult conversation and negotiation preparation pack, and a written and digital communication rewrite.

Start with one real situation and practice on it as you go. This course is listed at beginner level, and it supports that approach with a discussion prompt in every thematic module, such as "The Person Whose Style Is Nothing Like Yours" and "The Conversation You Have Been Putting Off." Module 6 gives you "The Communication Cheat Sheet: The Whole Course on One Page" and "The Part of Tens" as quick references for later.

There is no single standard list, and sources group communication skills differently. The common groupings are verbal, non-verbal, written, and listening, and this course covers all four.
