What you'll learn

  • Deploy, size, and manage virtual machines on IBM Cloud to run a real workload on demand instead of waiting on hardware

  • Build a segmented cloud network with subnets and security groups, then attach storage to create one working environment

  • Explain how containers differ from virtual machines, then run a basic container and manage it through its lifecycle

  • Describe what OpenShift and Kubernetes provide for operations work, and deploy a sample application on OpenShift

There are 4 modules in this course

This module builds practical skills in cloud provisioning and cloud virtual machine operations on IBM Cloud. Learners provision a virtual server instance inside a virtual private cloud (VPC), size it by choosing a profile, reach it securely over SSH with a key created first, and record it in a component inventory so the organization can account for it. The module develops core cloud infrastructure and cloud operations skills — cloud computing fundamentals, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), IT asset inventory and asset management, and cloud cost management — and explains why a provisioned machine is not yet a finished one: the platform runs and bills a virtual server the moment you create it, but nothing records that it exists until a separate act enters it into the inventory. An interactive panel sets the platform's running-instance view beside the component inventory, and the learner records the instance the inventory is missing until a completeness check passes. It suits anyone learning cloud provisioning, virtual machines, cloud infrastructure, cloud computing, IaaS, VPC, cloud operations, systems administration, IT asset inventory, asset management, cloud cost management, or SSH access.

This module introduces cloud networking and storage for systems administrators who need to control which traffic reaches a host and provide the host with durable capacity. Learners divide a virtual network into subnets, write security group rules for named flows, protect a storefront tier and management host with least-privilege access, and attach and mount a block volume. They learn to distinguish a working connection from a narrowly permitted one, and to verify the network and storage paths before calling the setup complete. A browser activity illustrates how removing one rule changes reachability; an optional local Linux path practices the same allow-list logic with host-firewall rules.

This module introduces containers and their lifecycle for learners preparing to support systems, cloud operations, or DevOps work. Learners run one container on a host, stop it, start it again, and remove it. They track what each operation preserves or destroys: stopping preserves the writable layer, while removing deletes it. The module also explains how containers differ from virtual machines: containers share the host's operating-system kernel, carry no guest operating system, and isolate at the software layer rather than behind a hypervisor. A browser activity illustrates lifecycle changes, and an optional path uses a learner's own Linux machine.

This module introduces container orchestration for systems administrators and cloud operations teams. Learners deploy a sample application, expose it at an address outside the cluster, and inspect how the platform maintains the declared number of application copies. They learn to distinguish desired state from actual state, a running Pod from a reachable application, and Kubernetes objects from the features OpenShift adds. A browser activity lets learners change a deployment and observe the platform's response; an optional path repeats the work in a hosted environment.
