Online degrees are academic degrees awarded to individuals who complete an online program of study. You can earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees through online programs. Bachelor’s degrees typically take four years to complete. A master’s degree is an advanced degree that you can earn after you complete a bachelor’s degree, and they usually take one to two years to complete.
Earning an online degree can enable you to change careers, apply for a promotion, or prepare for additional studies. Some companies require employees to have a degree for certain jobs. Say, for example, that you are currently working as a sales representative at a company and want to apply for a position as director of sales. The company may list a degree as a requirement for all applicants. In that case, a degree like master of business administration (MBA) can be beneficial.
Jobs that require at least a bachelor’s degree usually fall into one of seven industry categories: business and finance, education, computer science, arts and media, architecture and engineering, health care, and sciences. Specific jobs you might find in these fields that require a degree include accountants, marketing specialists, financial analysts, teachers, software developers, computer programmers, and actuaries. Mental health counselors, dieticians, and public relations specialists typically need a degree to work in their fields.
Some skills or experience you might need to already have before earning an online degree include a high school diploma or equivalent and experience using a computer. When taking online classes, you typically access the coursework through an online platform that requires access to the internet. You also may find it helpful to feel comfortable using a computer and navigating websites. It can be beneficial to have strong research skills, and you'll need to be self-motivated as well.
Earning an online degree might be right for you if you’re a self-motivated individual who has strong organizational and time management skills. It also may be right for you if you want to advance in your career and need a degree to do so but want to plan your classes around your schedule. Being able to work on your coursework from home and on your own schedule can be attractive if you work full time and have family obligations that restrict the hours you have available to study.
