This master’s degree opens multiple career pathways: educational technology specialists, teachers on special assignments, curriculum designers, instructional designers, education and instructional consultants, and engaged instructional practitioners/teachers/coaches/educational assistants. These roles serve today’s learners through the most relevant means and modes necessary to prepare them for the future.
It would be easy to pool the two degree types, but the Instructional Technology degree has broader potential. Instructional Technology opens the focus of learning theories beyond the educational cannon. A Master of Arts in Education, Instructional Technology, extends beyond the educational world to also encompass the most relevant modern thinkers from the worlds of leadership, business, communications, media, and technology.
Of course, higher levels of education qualify a person for higher income potential, but earning this degree is more than that. With the rapid pace of technological change in the classroom and the student experience, this degree positions you to become an educational leader moving forward. After all, your goal in becoming a teacher was to reach your students. By incorporating engaging online course design into your teaching, you’ll be doing just that. Isn’t that the point of it all?
If you’re reading this, you’re likely a 21st-century learner. Whether education is out of need (say for a better career) or necessity (to earn a diploma, certificate, or college degree), 21st-century learners approach the classroom with a different mindset than learners just a decade ago. Adult learners today seek fully online education options to blend into busy lives juggling work and family. They don’t want to return to the physical classroom. While K-12 students may be required to be there “in person,” they don’t expect to be confronted with endless one-sided lectures in the classroom — they are used to far more interactive environments in entertainment, and they expect the same in their learning environment.
While not a proper title, per se, being a 21st-century educator means you’re committed to utilizing the latest tools and technology to elevate your coursework and teaching. It means you’re committed to higher levels of student engagement, as your students respond to your dynamic instruction, which of course leads to better learning outcomes. Today’s students are different from those just 20 years ago, and 21st-century educators appreciate these differences and cater to them.
